Introduction to the Cohort
The Vantaa 85+ study is a population-based, prospective cohort study conducted in the city of Vantaa in Southern Finland. All city residents who were at least 85 years old on April 1st, 1991, including those who were institutionalized, were invited to participate (n = 601).

Clinical evaluations (n=553 at baseline), including structured neurological examinations (n=304 at baseline), were conducted on five occasions. Baseline clinical evaluations were conducted between April 1991 and 1992, and subsequent evaluations on surviving participants were conducted in 1994, 1996, 1999 and 2001. Neuropathological examinations and genetic testing have also been performed on subsets of the initial cohort.

Participants were all residents of Finland. No information on ethnicity or race has been reported.
