Cohort: Washington Heights-Inwood Columbia Aging Project
Risk Factors:

Introduction to the Cohort
Between 1991 and 1996, investigators for the Washington Heights-Inwood Columbia Aging Project (WHICAP) used data from the Healthcare Financing Administration to identify, invite and enroll 1,079 cognitively intact Medicare recipients living in the Washington Heights community in New York City, NY, USA. Since enrollment, participants have undergone annual evaluations. The purpose of the WHICAP is to prospectively examine risk factors for AD and dementia. At enrollment, members of the cohort were, on average, 75.3 years old (SD, 5.8); 68% were female.

Ethnicity Breakdown
Sixty-one percent of cohort members identified themselves as Hispanic (84% of whom were of Caribbean origin), 22% were white, and 17% were African-American.

Diagnosis & Evaluation Methods
